Description

Nobody can take what you learn away from you. Our ancestors knew that, which is why they built schools before they built anything else. Put this framed piece on your desk, in your classroom, or above your child's homework table and let it say what every elder in your family already knows: get your education.

About This Framed Print

The Power of Education framed motivational print features a photograph of a Reconstruction era schoolhouse built for formerly enslaved people, with a message about education as the foundation for advancement. The image is double matted and set in a black frame, finished and ready to display.

The message printed on the poster reads:

Even in the midst of our worst struggles, our forefathers knew that part of our advancement and growth began with a sound education

The History Behind the Image

After the Civil War, newly freed Black communities made education one of their first priorities. Between 1865 and 1872, the Freedmen's Bureau, working with churches, missionary societies, and Black communities themselves, helped establish over 1,000 schools across the South, along with institutions that grew into Howard, Fisk, and Atlanta University. Many schoolhouses were built and funded by freedpeople who had been forbidden by law to read just a few years earlier. Supplier materials date this school to 1870, which falls within the Reconstruction era.
