About This Framed Print
This Responsibility framed motivational print features a photograph of Black voters in Peachtree, Alabama, many casting ballots for the first time after the Voting Rights Act of 1965, with a message about protecting hard-won rights. The image is double matted and set in a black frame, finished and ready to display.
The message printed on the poster reads:
In order to protect the rights our ancestors fought hard to obtain, we are obligated to maintain a strong voice in the direction of our country.
The History Behind the Image
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965, outlawing literacy tests and other tactics used to keep Black citizens from voting. At the Alabama primary on May 3, 1966, Black residents of Peachtree, in Wilcox County, voted in large numbers for the first time in their lives, at a polling place set up in a small store. A photograph of that day, now held by the National Archives in U.S. Information Agency records, became one of the defining images of the new era of Black voting power in the South.
