The History Behind the Image
Carter G. Woodson earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1912, the second Black American to do so after W.E.B. Du Bois. In 1915 he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and in February 1926 he launched Negro History Week. That observance grew into Black History Month, officially recognized in 1976. His 1933 book, The Mis-Education of the Negro, is still widely read today.
