About This Framed Print

The History Behind the Image
Frederick Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland in 1838 and became one of the leading abolitionists, orators, and writers of the 19th century. His 1845 Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave became a bestseller, and in 1847 he launched his antislavery newspaper, The North Star. Douglass understood the power of an image; he is widely recognized as the most photographed American of the 19th century, with 160 known photographs, and he used portraits like this one to show the world the dignity of Black Americans.
