You will get knocked down. That part is guaranteed. What you do after you hit the ground is the part you control. The Freedom Riders climbed out of a burning bus in 1961 and the movement climbed right back on the next one. Hang this where you need it most, and let it remind you every morning: you are built to keep going.
About This Framed Print
This Perseverance framed motivational print pairs a documentary photograph of the Freedom Riders with a dictionary-style definition of the word, printed beneath the image. The image is double matted and set in a black frame, finished and ready to display.
The definition printed on the poster reads:
per-se-ver-ance n. 1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc. especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement.
The History Behind the Image
On May 14, 1961, Mother's Day, a mob attacked and firebombed a Greyhound bus carrying Freedom Riders a few miles outside Anniston, Alabama. The riders, organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), were testing the Supreme Court rulings that outlawed segregation in interstate bus travel. Riders escaped the burning bus only to be beaten, and a second group was attacked on a Trailways bus the same day in Anniston and Birmingham. The rides continued anyway, as new volunteers took the places of the injured, and by fall the Interstate Commerce Commission ordered an end to segregated interstate terminals.
