Description

Before the modern Orioles arrived in 1954, Baltimore's Black baseball fans had the Black Sox: a club that built its own ballpark, helped found the Eastern Colored League and won the 1929 American Negro League championship. This officially licensed long sleeve tee brings that history into your everyday rotation in black and orange.

"BLACK SOX" arches across the chest in white lettering outlined in orange, above a decorative orange "B" flanked by "19" and "16." "BALTIMORE" runs down one sleeve and "BLACK SOX" down the other, an orange ringer collar frames the neckline, and a woven Baltimore Black Sox 1916 to 1936 patch sits at the lower front hem.

About those dates: the shirt marks 1916 to 1936, the span many baseball references give for the franchise. Historian Bernard McKenna, author of The Baltimore Black Sox: A Negro Leagues History, 1913-1936, traces the club's roots back to 1913.

The Black Sox became charter members of the Eastern Colored League in 1923 and played their home games at Maryland Baseball Park in South Baltimore, a ballpark the club owned outright. They finished second in 1924 under player-manager Pete Hill, and in 1929 they won the American Negro League title behind the "Million Dollar Infield" of Jud Wilson, Frank Warfield, Oliver Marcell and Dick Lundy. Satchel Paige pitched for Baltimore in 1930, and Baltimore native Leon Day began his career with the Black Sox in 1934. Wilson, Hill, Paige and Day are all in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Made from 100% cotton for soft, breathable everyday wear, this tee is available in sizes Small through 5X-Large. Machine wash cold with dark colors, tumble dry low and use non-chlorine bleach only if needed. Do not iron or dry clean the printed graphics.
