Rep one of Baltimore's proudest baseball traditions with the Baltimore Black Sox Legacy Baseball Cap. Founded in 1913 and a charter member of the Eastern Colored League in 1923, the Black Sox gave Charm City a championship Black ball club, winning the 1929 American Negro League title and fielding Hall of Famers Jud Wilson, Pete Hill, Satchel Paige and Leon Day.
This orange wool blend cap features a bold black "B" outlined in white on the front crown, set off by a black brim and black top button. A round Baltimore Black Sox logo patch sits on the side panel, "BALTIMORE" arches in white over "BLACK SOX" in black across the back, and "1923" is embroidered in white on the rear strap, marking the year the club helped launch the Eastern Colored League. Every graphic is embroidered for a clean vintage look that holds up to regular wear.
The structured six-panel crown and curved brim give it a classic ballpark profile, and the adjustable hook-and-loop (Velcro) back strap makes it easy to get the right fit. Hand wash only to protect the wool blend and embroidery.
Wear it to Camden Yards, add it to your Negro League collection, or give it to the Baltimore native who knows the city's baseball story did not start with the Orioles. Complete the look with the matching Baltimore Black Sox Legacy Baseball Jersey, orange and black with BALTIMORE 23 on the back. Prefer black? The Baltimore Black Sox began as an independent club in 1913 and played home games at Westport Park in South Baltimore from 1917. In 1921 they moved a few blocks north to Maryland Baseball Park at Bush and Russell Streets, a ballpark the club built and owned, and in 1923 the Black Sox became one of the six original members of the Eastern Colored League.
Baltimore climbed to second place in 1924 under Hall of Fame player-manager Pete Hill, and that October Maryland Baseball Park hosted two games of the first Colored World Series. Slugger John Beckwith joined the club that season, and first baseman Jud "Boojum" Wilson, one of the most feared hitters of his generation, anchored the lineup through the end of the decade.
The franchise reached its peak in 1929. With Wilson at first, Frank Warfield at second, Dick Lundy at shortstop and Oliver Marcell at third, Baltimore fielded the famed "Million Dollar Infield," a nickname the press gave the four for what they might have earned in the segregated major leagues. The Black Sox won over 70 percent of their games that season and claimed the American Negro League championship.
Satchel Paige pitched for Baltimore in 1930, and hometown hero Leon Day began his professional career with the Black Sox in 1934. Both joined Wilson and Hill in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The team moved to Bugle Field in 1932, played in the East-West League and the Negro National League, and folded in the mid-1930s. In 2007, the Baltimore Orioles wore Black Sox uniforms on the field to honor the club's legacy.
When you wear this cap, you carry the name of a team that built its own ballpark, won a championship and sent four players to Cooperstown.
