This heritage jersey brings back one of the East Coast's great Black baseball clubs. The Baltimore Black Sox were charter members of the Eastern Colored League, won the 1929 American Negro League championship and fielded Hall of Famers Jud Wilson, Pete Hill, Satchel Paige and Leon Day.
"BLACK SOX" arches across the chest in brown felt lettering with a stitched border, framed by brown and gold double piping along the V-neck collar, button placket and sleeve cuffs. The right sleeve carries a gold circle patch with a brown felt "B," and the left sleeve features a brown baseball-shaped patch reading "BALTIMORE" with "19" and "16" and gold stitched seams. "Heritage Collection" is chain-stitched in red script near the hem, and a red woven Heritage Collection label at the neck marks it as an officially licensed piece.
Cut from soft ivory cotton with a full button front and curved tail hem, it wears comfortably buttoned over a tee or open as a layer. The ivory base with brown and gold trim pairs easily with denim, khakis or black. Available in sizes Small through 5X-Large.
The 1916 on the sleeve patch reflects the founding date many baseball references give for the club. Historian Bernard McKenna traces the Black Sox back to 1913.
In the 1920s the Black Sox played at Maryland Baseball Park in South Baltimore, a ballpark the club owned outright. They finished second in the Eastern Colored League in 1924, and that fall their park hosted two games of the first Colored World Series. In 1929 the "Million Dollar Infield" of Jud Wilson, Frank Warfield, Oliver Marcell and Dick Lundy led Baltimore to the American Negro League title. Satchel Paige pitched for the club in 1930, and Baltimore native Leon Day began his career with the Black Sox in 1934. In 2007, the Baltimore Orioles wore Black Sox uniforms on the field to honor the team.
Officially licensed. A portion of every purchase benefits the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, helping keep these stories alive for future generations.
