Think. Work. Serve. Then celebrate. The Tennessee State University Tigers Proud Santa Claus Figurine brings Big Blue home for the holidays with a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a royal blue knit sweater, the white TSU tiger logo across his chest, and a TENNESSEE STATE pennant in his hand. For the TSU Tiger family, from North Nashville to wherever life has taken you, this is Christmas decor with a Tigerbelle's speed and the Aristocrat of Bands' swagger.
Santa in Big Blue
A royal blue stocking cap with a thick white faux-fur brim frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. The white tiger and TSU letters are embroidered on his blue sweater, and white pants with fur cuffs drop to black boots. One hand holds a blue and white pennant bearing the tiger logo and the TENNESSEE STATE name, beside a green wreath dotted with blue berries. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord holds the green velvet toy sack over his shoulder, packed with a plush teddy bear, a frosted mini Christmas tree, and a small gold horn.
The Legacy Behind the Tiger
Tennessee's legislature created the school in 1909, and its first 247 students began classes on June 19, 1912, at what was then an agricultural and industrial normal school in Nashville. It grew into a four-year college in the 1920s, earned full land-grant status in 1958, and took the name Tennessee State University in 1968. Its motto, Think. Work. Serve., still frames the TSU experience.
Coach Ed Temple, himself a TSU alumnus, built the Tigerbelles into a track dynasty over 44 years, sending 40 of them to the Olympics. Among them was Wilma Rudolph, class of 1963, who at the 1960 Rome Games became the first American woman to win three gold medals at a single Olympics. TSU also claims media icon Oprah Winfrey, who completed her degree in 1987; Olympic long jump champion Ralph Boston; cellular technology pioneer Jesse Russell, class of 1972; and NFL stars Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Richard Dent. In 2023 the Aristocrat of Bands became the first college marching band to win a Grammy, for Best Roots Gospel Album.
Christmas Decor for the TSU Tiger Family
Give this African American Santa Claus figurine a spot on the mantel, a bookshelf, an office desk, or the entry table that greets holiday guests. It makes a Christmas gift for a TSU graduate far from Nashville, a student finishing the fall semester, or the family that still talks about Roar on the Yard all year long. Add more of the HBCU Proud Santas series so every school in the family is represented.
