Jaguar Nation knows the holiday season really begins the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when the Human Jukebox fills the Superdome and Southern meets Grambling in the Bayou Classic. The Southern University Jaguars Proud Santa Claus Figurine keeps that Columbia blue and gold going all the way to Christmas: a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a Columbia blue knit sweater with the SU logo across his chest and a SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY pennant raised high.
Santa in Columbia Blue and Gold
A Columbia blue stocking cap with a thick white faux-fur brim frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. The blue and gold SU logo is embroidered on his sweater, and gold pants with white fur cuffs drop to black boots. One hand holds a pennant, Columbia blue with the SU logo and white with the SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY name, beside a green wreath dotted with blue and white berries. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord holds the green velvet toy sack over his shoulder, filled with a plush teddy bear, a frosted mini Christmas tree, and a small gold horn.
The Legacy Behind the Jaguar
Southern University grew out of the 1879 Louisiana Constitutional Convention, where P.B.S. Pinchback, T.T. Allain, Henry Demas, and T.B. Stamps pressed for a college for Black Louisianans. The Legislature chartered it in New Orleans in 1880, it became a land-grant institution under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, and in 1914 it reopened on the bluffs of Scotlandville in Baton Rouge. Today it is the flagship of the Southern University System, which the university describes as the only historically Black university system in the nation.
Jaguar Nation includes NBA champion Avery Johnson, class of 1988; Pro Football Hall of Famers Mel Blount and Aeneas Williams, who both played at Southern; Medal of Honor recipient Col. Paris Davis; and Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis studied there under Alvin Batiste. The Human Jukebox, founded in 1947, has marched with the Fabulous Dancing Dolls since 1969, and the Bayou Classic rivalry with Grambling dates to 1932.
Christmas Decor for Jaguar Nation
Give this African American Santa Claus figurine a place on the mantel, a bookcase, an office desk, or the table where the family gathers after the Classic. It makes a Christmas gift for a Southern graduate who can't make it back to the Bluff, a student home for winter break, or the parent who has cheered for the Jaguars since before you were born. Families split between Southern and Grambling can add the Grambling State Proud Santa and let the rivalry live on the mantel.
