For nearly a century, Atlanta has started its Christmas season listening to the Morehouse College Glee Club, and in December 2026 the Spelman and Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert celebrates its 100th year. The Morehouse College Maroon Tigers HBCU College Santa Claus Figurine brings that tradition home: a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a maroon coat and stocking cap trimmed in white faux fur, with a maroon toy sack bearing the Morehouse M set at his feet. Every Morehouse Man deserves a Santa dressed for the occasion.
Santa in Maroon and White
A maroon stocking cap with a white fur brim, a sprig of holly with red berries, and a gold bell at the tip frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. His maroon coat is edged in white fur and cinched with a black belt and gold buckle. One hand holds a frosted mini Christmas tree. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord leads to the maroon toy sack in front of him, embroidered with the white M logo and topped with a wrapped red gift, a candy cane, holly, and red and gold berry picks.
The Legacy Behind the Maroon Tiger
Morehouse College was founded on February 14, 1867, as the Augusta Institute in Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, by the Rev. William Jefferson White, the Rev. Richard C. Coulter, and the Rev. Edmund Turney. It moved to Atlanta in 1879 as Atlanta Baptist Seminary and in 1913 took the name of Henry Lyman Morehouse of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Under President Benjamin Mays, who led the college from 1940 to 1967, Morehouse became known worldwide for shaping leaders, and it describes itself today as the only historically Black college for men.
Morehouse Men include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who entered at 15 and graduated in 1948; Atlanta's first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson, class of 1956; filmmaker Spike Lee, class of 1979; actor Samuel L. Jackson, class of 1972; Olympic hurdles champion Edwin Moses, class of 1978; and U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, class of 1991. The Glee Club, which dates to 1911, joins the Spelman College Glee Club each December for the Christmas Carol Concert, first sung in 1927.
