The Legacy Behind the Jaguar
Southern University was chartered in New Orleans in 1880, the result of a push at the 1879 Louisiana Constitutional Convention led by P.B.S. Pinchback and fellow Black delegates for a college serving Black Louisianans. It joined the ranks of land-grant institutions under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, and in 1914 it relocated to Scotlandville, overlooking the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge. The Southern University System was established in 1974.
Southern has produced baseball Hall of Famer Lou Brock, NFL receiver Harold Carmichael, Medal of Honor recipient Col. Paris Davis, and Brig. Gen. Sherian Cadoria, along with NBA champion Avery Johnson, class of 1988. The Human Jukebox has been making noise since 1947, the Fabulous Dancing Dolls joined it in 1969, and the Bayou Classic with Grambling has owned the Saturday after Thanksgiving since 1974.
