We are FAMUly, and this Christmas Santa is part of it. The Florida A&M University Rattlers HBCU College Santa Claus Figurine dresses a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a green coat and stocking cap trimmed in white faux fur, with orange pants and a green toy sack carrying the FAMU Rattlers logo at his feet. When the Florida Classic is over and the tree goes up, Rattler Nation's orange and green stays front and center.
Santa in Orange and Green
A green stocking cap with a white fur brim, a sprig of holly, and a gold bell at the tip frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. His green coat is edged in white fur and cinched with a black belt and gold buckle over orange pants and black boots. One hand holds a frosted mini Christmas tree. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord leads to the green toy sack in front of him, embroidered with the orange rattler and FAMU RATTLERS lettering and topped with a wrapped red gift, a candy cane, holly, and red and gold berry picks.
The Legacy Behind the Rattler
Florida A&M opened on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, with 15 students and two instructors, President Thomas DeSaille Tucker and Thomas Van Rennselaer Gibbs. The Rattler name traces to 1891, when the school moved to a hilltop plantation known for its rattlesnakes, and today the campus sits atop one of the highest of Tallahassee's seven hills. It became Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1953 and is known for its commitment to Excellence with Caring.
The FAMUly includes tennis champion Althea Gibson, class of 1953; jazz great Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, class of 1948; Olympic sprinter and Super Bowl champion Bob Hayes, who returned to finish his degree in 1994; film producer Will Packer, class of 1996; Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose; and sportscaster Pam Oliver. Under William P. Foster, who led it from 1946 to 1998, the Marching 100 became one of the most imitated bands in America and represented the United States in Paris in 1989. Each November, the Florida Classic with Bethune-Cookman brings the FAMUly together in Orlando.
Christmas Decorations for the FAMUly
