Black and Gold From Cap to Tip
The bulb follows a classic finial shape, rising from a pointed tip to a gold cap in alternating black and gold swirl stripes. A raised gold band circles its middle, embossed with a geometric lattice and edged in gold on both sides. At the center sits a white medallion inside a gold ring, carrying the black ASU letters and a yellow and black Hornet in flight. It is mounted on small pins at the top and bottom so it rotates within its window. A gold cord loops through the cap for hanging, and the ornament comes in a plastic storage box so it can be packed away after the season and brought back out every December.
From Marion to Montgomery to Your Tree
Alabama State University traces its roots to 1867, when nine formerly enslaved men in Marion, Alabama, remembered today as the Marion Nine, pooled their money to buy land and open the Lincoln Normal School. In 1874 it became one of the first state-supported schools for Black students in the nation, and in 1887 it moved to Montgomery, where it earned university status in 1969. Its graduates helped lead the civil rights movement, including Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, and attorney Fred Gray. Hornet pride runs loudest every fall, when the Mighty Marching Hornets and the Stingettes take the field, the Magic City Classic fills Birmingham, and the Turkey Day Classic against Tuskegee, first played in 1924 and considered the first Black college football classic, brings families together on Thanksgiving.
