Description

Every December since 1927, the voices of the Spelman College Glee Club have helped Atlanta open the Christmas season, and in 2026 the Spelman and Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert reaches its centennial year. The Spelman College Lady Jaguars Proud Santa Claus Figurine brings that same Spelman blue to your holiday decor: a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a royal blue knit sweater with SPELMAN stitched across the chest and a blue and white pennant raised high. For every Spelmanite, and every family that has sent a daughter to the AUC, Santa is coming home in the right colors.

Santa in Spelman Blue

A royal blue stocking cap with a thick white faux-fur brim frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. SPELMAN runs across his sweater in white varsity letters. One hand holds a pennant, royal blue at the staff and white at the tip with SPELMAN in navy, beside a small green wreath dotted with blue and white berries. The other carries his naughty and nice list, a long cloth scroll stitched with names. A gold twisted cord holds the dark green toy sack on his shoulder, filled with a plush teddy bear tied in a blue ribbon, a frosted mini Christmas tree, a small gold horn, and blue and white berry picks. Dark pants with white fur cuffs and black boots finish the outfit.

The Legacy Behind the Blue

Spelman College opened on April 11, 1881, as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, holding its first classes in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church under founders Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles. In 1884 the school took the name Spelman Seminary to honor Laura Spelman Rockefeller and her parents, Harvey Buel and Lucy Henry Spelman, who were antislavery activists, and it became Spelman College in 1924. The first college degrees went to Jane Anna Granderson and Claudia T. White in 1901. Generations of Spelman Women have since gone on to shape the nation, among them Children's Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman, author Alice Walker, Georgia political leader Stacey Abrams, Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Bernice Johnson Reagon, actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, and former Walgreens Boots Alliance chief executive Rosalind Brewer.

Spelman tradition is a sisterhood you can see. Graduates wear white to Class Day and Commencement, seniors have dedicated class benches since 1939, and the Christmas Carol Concert, founded by Spelman President Florence Matilda Read and Morehouse President John Hope, was first sung in Sisters Chapel on December 21, 1927.

Christmas Decor for Every Spelmanite

Give this African American Santa Claus figurine a place on the mantel, a dorm room shelf, an office bookcase, or the entry table that greets holiday guests. It makes a thoughtful Christmas gift for a new graduate, a first-year student finishing her first fall in Atlanta, a mother and daughter who share the same alma mater, or the Spelman sister who has everything else in blue and white. Pair it with the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers Santa for a SpelHouse mantel that sings in harmony.
