Opportunity does not always knock. Sometimes you have to build the door. The children in this classroom learned with secondhand books in underfunded schools, and their teachers still turned out leaders. Look past the barriers in front of you. Believe in your ideas and your abilities, and you will find opportunity where other people see a wall.
About This Poster
This Opportunity motivational poster features a vintage photograph of a segregated classroom from 1945, paired with a message about seeing past traditional barriers. The open edition poster is printed on paper and ready for framing or display as is.
The message printed on the poster reads:
Being able to see past traditional barriers and having an intense belief in your ideas and abilities will help you take advantage of any opportunity.
The History Behind the Image
Under the 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, segregation was legal under the doctrine of "separate but equal." In practice, schools for Black children received far less funding, poorer buildings, and fewer materials, and dedicated Black teachers and communities often kept them running with very little. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal, opening a new era for the generation that followed students like these.
