Description

The barriers are real, and so is your power to see past them. Generations of Black students learned in segregated classrooms with less of everything except determination. Keep this framed reminder near your study space and let it teach the lesson again: believe in yourself and seize every opening.

About This Framed Print

This Opportunity framed motivational print features a vintage photograph of a segregated classroom from 1945, paired with a message about seeing past traditional barriers. The image is double matted and set in a black frame, finished and ready to display.

The message printed on the poster reads:

Being able to see past traditional barriers and having an intense belief in your ideas and abilities will help you take advantage of any opportunity.

The History Behind the Image

Under the 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, segregation was legal under the doctrine of "separate but equal." In practice, schools for Black children received far less funding, poorer buildings, and fewer materials, and dedicated Black teachers and communities often kept them running with very little. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal, opening a new era for the generation that followed students like these.
