Sankofa, a single word that holds the wisdom of generations. "Go back and get it." "Return to your roots." In the Akan culture of Ghana, this powerful Adinkra symbol teaches us that true progress requires honoring the past.
Ghanaian artisan Eva Asantewa Amakye brings this philosophy to life through her masterful hand-carved walking stick, where cultural heritage meets functional artistry. The piece features a striking Sankofa bird motif, depicted looking backward while moving forward, carrying a precious egg that represents the treasures of ancestral knowledge. This iconic symbol reminds us that understanding where we come from strengthens every step we take into the future.
The Akan people of Ghana developed the Adinkra symbol system centuries ago, creating a visual language that communicates profound philosophical concepts. Each symbol carries layered meanings passed down through generations, serving as both artistic expression and cultural preservation. Sankofa remains one of the most recognized and beloved symbols, representing the essential connection between past, present, and future.
Carved from rich sese wood and hand-painted to accentuate every detail, this walking stick showcases traditional West African craftsmanship. The comfortable handle integrates seamlessly with the bird design, while the twisted shaft demonstrates the artisan's skill and patience. Earth-toned accents in black, brown, and cream honor the natural materials and traditional aesthetic.
Whether displayed on your wall as a celebration of African heritage or carried as a distinctive accessory during special occasions, this piece serves as both a conversation starter and a cultural statement. Each hand-crafted walking stick carries subtle variations in color and design, authentic characteristics that distinguish genuine artisan work from mass production.
Please Note: This decorative walking stick supports up to 200 lbs and has not been approved as a medical mobility aid. It is crafted for decorative purposes, cultural celebration, and light accessory use.
