Description

Raise your trunk in greeting. Osunu Greeting turns the African elephant into a walking stick you can hold: its long, lean trunk curves upward to form the handle itself, so every grip becomes a handshake with one of Africa's most honored animals.

Designed by Ghanaian artisan Eva Asantewa Amakye, this premium walking stick is thicker and more intricately carved than most standard African walking sticks. Carved in a dark brown-black finish, it is set with ornately embossed aluminum rings toward the bottom that catch the light as you walk.

The Elephant: Strength, Longevity and Unity

Osunu is the Twi word for elephant, and in Ghana the elephant holds a place of honor. Across many African cultures it stands for power and strength, and it is celebrated for longevity, stamina, a cooperative spirit and loyalty to its herd. Several Akan chiefs have claimed the elephant as a royal emblem, and carved elephants appear on the staffs of their spokesmen. Carrying Osunu Greeting is a way to keep those virtues close: steady strength, a long view of life and care for the people around you.

Walking Sticks in African Tradition

Many African societies regard a person carrying a walking stick with respect and dignity. Usually associated with age, the walking stick marks someone believed to have gathered knowledge and wisdom over the years, and its design has long signaled the bearer's standing and values. Osunu Greeting carries that tradition in one of the most recognizable forms in African art.

Hand Carved in Ghana

Each Osunu Greeting walking stick is hand carved from sese wood, a native West African wood prized by Ghanaian carvers for its workability and fine detail. Because every piece is made by hand, there are slight differences in size, shape and pattern, which make each walking stick one of a kind.

Eva Asantewa Amakye designs walking sticks rooted in Ghanaian symbolism, working closely with master carvers in Accra. Her collection at Black Art Depot also includes Moving Couple and Fierce Denkyem. For another take on the elephant, see the Loyalty and Community walking stick by Winfred Ansah Okoampah.

Display It or Carry It

Hang it on a wall with masks and elephant art, display it in a study or office, or carry it to church, reunions and cultural celebrations. It makes a meaningful gift for a grandparent, family elder, retiree or anyone known for their strength and steady presence.

Please Note: This decorative walking stick has not been approved as a medical mobility aid and is not intended for heavy-duty use. It is crafted for display, cultural celebration and light accessory use. The stick does not include a rubber tip. You can purchase one separately; however, because each piece is handmade and the end width varies, we recommend waiting until your walking stick arrives so you can measure it and choose a tip that fits properly.
