About the Artist

Long before her paintings appeared on planners and calendars, Sylvia "Gbaby" Cohen worked as a graphic artist at the San Diego Monitor News under artist Albert Fennell, after earning her degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She went on to launch Another Sylvia Original, a line of hand-painted tees sold to stores around the country, and opened Unique Fashion Gallery in San Diego as a home for seven artists and designers. The Gbaby name came from her daughter, actress Giovonnie Samuels of Nickelodeon's All That. When the two could not find a handbag that showed women of color, Sylvia painted her own, and the brand grew from there into the bold, affirming portraits of Black women she is known for today.
