Description

On the highest of Tallahassee's seven hills, Rattler Nation dresses in orange and green, and this Christmas Santa joins the FAMUly. The Florida A&M University Rattlers (FAMU) Proud Santa Claus Figurine is a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a green knit sweater stitched with the FAMU Rattlers logo, orange pants trimmed in white faux fur, and a Florida A&M pennant raised high. From the Florida Classic to the Christmas tree, he keeps Rattler pride on display all season.

Santa in Orange and Green

A green stocking cap with a thick white fur brim frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. Across his green sweater, the orange rattler head strikes beside FAMU in orange and RATTLERS in white. Orange pants with white fur cuffs drop to black boots. One hand holds a green and white pennant with the rattler logo and FLORIDA A&M lettering, along with a boxwood wreath dotted with orange and white berries. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord holds the green toy sack over his shoulder, packed with a plush teddy bear, a frosted mini Christmas tree, a small gold horn, and orange and white berry picks.

The Legacy Behind the Rattler

Florida A&M began classes on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, with 15 students and two instructors, Thomas DeSaille Tucker and Thomas Van Rennselaer Gibbs. In 1891 the school moved to its present hilltop site in Tallahassee, land known for its rattlesnakes, which gave the Rattlers their name. It became Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1953, and its guiding principle, Excellence with Caring, still sets the standard on the Hill.

Rattlers who made history include Althea Gibson, class of 1953, the first Black player to win a Wimbledon singles title; jazz saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, class of 1948; Olympic gold medalist and Super Bowl champion Bob Hayes; Hollywood producer Will Packer, class of 1996; and Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose. The Marching 100, built by William P. Foster from 1946 to 1998, performed with Prince at Super Bowl XLI and set the pace for HBCU bands across the country.

Christmas Decor for Rattler Nation

Give this African American Santa Claus figurine a place on the mantel, a bookshelf, an office desk, or the entry table where holiday guests come in. It makes a Christmas gift for a FAMU graduate far from Tallahassee, a student home from the Hill for winter break, or the family that plans every November around the Florida Classic. Pair him with the FAMU College Santa in the fur-trimmed coat for a two-Santa Rattler display.
