Why It Matters
Graduation has special meaning in Black families, many of whom celebrate first-generation graduates whose ancestors were denied the right to an education. Historically Black colleges and universities, founded largely after the Civil War, have produced generations of Black doctors, lawyers, teachers, and leaders.
