Description

A lion does not hurry. It moves with the calm of a creature that knows its place in the world. Royalty and Courage captures that bearing in carved wood: a black or dark brown sese wood walking stick with a roaring lion standing proud just below the handle, its golden mane glowing against the dark finish.

Designed by Ghanaian artist Winfred Ansah Okoampah and hand-carved by local artisans from a single piece of sese wood, the stick rises from a wavy, river-like shaft to an open, sturdy handle. Panels of embossed aluminum with fine raised detail trace the length of the shaft and frame the lion on its decorated platform.

The Lion: Symbol of Royalty and Courage

Across Africa and throughout the diaspora, the lion has long stood for kingship. Its strength and commanding presence earned it the title king of beasts, and royal houses adopted it as an emblem of rightful authority; Ethiopia's imperial dynasty, for example, carried the Lion of Judah on its banners for generations. The lion also stands for courage: the will to face danger head-on and to protect family and community. Carrying this design is a statement of both. Walk with dignity, and stand firm when it counts.

Walking Sticks in African Tradition

In many African societies, a carved staff marks a person of standing. Among the Akan of Ghana, royal spokesmen known as Akyeame carry staffs crowned with carved figures that convey proverbs and emblems of power, with elephants, leopards, and other animals appearing often. Elders, too, have long carried carved sticks as signs of wisdom and respect. With its lion perched beneath the handle, Royalty and Courage echoes that tradition of carrying meaning in the hand.

Hand Carved in Ghana

Sese wood, native to West Africa, has been a mainstay of Ghanaian carving for generations, prized for the way it holds fine detail and takes a deep finish. This stick is carved from a single piece, finished in rich black and accented with embossed aluminum. Because every stick is shaped by hand, color, size, and motif vary slightly from piece to piece.

Born in Eastern Ghana in 1970, Winfred Ansah Okoampah is a dedicated woodcarver who draws inspiration from his dreams and his culture. He takes special pride in the finishing stage, sanding and detailing each piece by hand, and runs an eco-conscious workshop that uses every scrap of sese wood.

Display It or Carry It

Hang it on a wall as a bold accent beside masks and textiles, display it in a study or office, or carry it on a stroll, to church, or to cultural celebrations. It makes a powerful gift for a father, grandfather, leader, or anyone who has shown courage when it mattered.

Please Note: This decorative walking stick supports up to 200 lbs and is not intended for heavy-duty or medical use. It is crafted for display, cultural celebration, and light accessory use. The stick does not include a rubber tip. You can purchase one separately; however, because each piece is handmade and the end width varies, we recommend waiting until your walking stick arrives so you can measure it and choose a tip that fits properly.

Winfred Okoampah

Winfred Ansah Okoampah was born in 1970 in Ghana's Eastern Region and lost his father at age six, growing up with an uncle who farmed. Unable to continue school after fourth grade, he followed a friend to a local craft village, discovered wood carving and went on to master the craft, training apprentices of his own. Working mainly in sese wood and acrylics, he draws inspiration from his dreams and takes the greatest pride in the finishing stage of each piece. His growing workshop supports his family and community, and even the wood scraps from his carvings go to neighbors as firewood.
