Description

Some praise cannot stay seated. When the music swells and the Spirit moves, the hands go up, the feet go out, and the whole body says what words cannot. "Let them praise his name in the dance" (Psalm 149:3). That is the charge, and these three women answer it with everything they have: no holding back, no saving anything for later, all praise and all glory given back to the One who deserves it. Praise and Glory captures that moment of total surrender in a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle you can build with your own hands, piece by piece, the way faith itself is built.

What Is Praise Dance?

Praise dance, also called liturgical dance, is worship expressed through choreographed movement. Dancers minister during church services and religious events, interpreting a song, a scripture, or a testimony with their bodies so the congregation can see the message as well as hear it. Its roots run back to scripture, where King David danced before the Lord with all his might (2 Samuel 6:14) and the psalmist called God's people to praise Him with timbrel and dance (Psalm 150:4). In Black churches, praise dance grew into a cherished ministry, rising to prominence in the 1970s and drawing on modern dance, ballet, jazz, and the African traditions of movement in worship. Today dance ministries in congregations across the country carry it forward, and every performance is offered as an act of worship rather than a show.

The Scene

Three dancers move as one body against swirling clouds of magenta, violet, turquoise, and jade. At the top, a dancer with long locs gathered high turns her gaze to the side, one palm raised outward as if holding back the world. In the center, a dancer in a flowing teal skirt crouches low, one hand resting gently on the head of the sister below her. At the base, a dancer in a billowing pink skirt reaches forward along the floor, one leg extended behind her, her eyes lifted upward. Each wears a simple black leotard, so the color of their skirts and the arc of their arms carry the story. The composition stacks the three into a single rising line of worship, from the floor to the heavens.

The Photographer Behind the Image

Greg Perkins is a photographer whose lens is devoted to praise dancers and the moments when choreography gives way to genuine worship. He is also the founder of one of the largest Black-owned greeting card companies in America, and his photographs serve as the foundation for much of the art on its products. Images like this one begin in front of his camera and are then digitally enhanced or painted by artists, which is why the dancers carry the true weight and balance of real bodies in motion. Praise and Glory reflects his commitment to showing the beauty of Black worship.

A Rewarding Build

The three skirts give you clear starting points: pink, teal, and navy each form their own section, while the dancers' arms, faces, and locs reward close attention. The soft cloud background, shifting from magenta on the left to turquoise and green on the right, offers the gentler challenge that makes a 500-piece puzzle relaxing rather than frustrating. Build it alone during a quiet evening of reflection, or spread it across the table for family night after Sunday dinner.

A Gift for Those Who Minister Through Movement

Praise and Glory makes a meaningful gift for dance ministry members and leaders, praise team members, church mothers, and anyone who has felt the Spirit move them to their feet. It suits birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, ministry anniversaries, and recital gifts. Once finished, the image is lovely enough to glue and frame for a home, church office, or dance ministry room.
