Gbaby paints in saturated color with everything turned up, tangerine and magenta and electric green, and she treats Black hair as the main event. This is Black woman art with nothing held back. Afros, locs, twists, braids, headwraps, flowers growing straight out of the scalp. Faith, Peace, Hope, Love, Joy, and Grace get written directly onto the clothing. She is not interested in subtlety. A woman choosing herself does not whisper.

Sylvia "Gbaby" Cohen is the artist and CEO of Gbaby Art Inc. She earned a B.A. in liberal arts with a business minor from SUNY Binghamton, then worked as a graphic artist at the San Diego Monitor News under Albert Fennell before launching Another Sylvia Original, selling hand-painted tees to stores around the country. She later opened Unique Fashion Gallery in San Diego, home to seven artists and designers. The brand got its name on a television set: her daughter Giovonnie Samuels, nicknamed Gbaby, was filming Nickelodeon's All That and asked her mother for a handbag with women of color on it. Sylvia looked, could not find one, bought a plain bag, and painted the women herself. Everything since has come from that.
