Description

Where everybody is somebody, Santa is somebody too. The Grambling State Tigers Proud Santa Claus Figurine puts a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a gold knit sweater with the black G across his chest and a GRAMBLING pennant in his hand, ready for the weekend after Thanksgiving when the Tigers take on Southern in the Bayou Classic. When the game is over and the decorations come out, Grambling's black and gold stays on display all season.

Santa in Black and Gold

A gold stocking cap with a thick white faux-fur brim frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. The bold black G on his gold sweater is outlined in white, and black pants with white fur cuffs drop to black boots. One hand holds a gold and white pennant carrying the G and the GRAMBLING name, alongside a green wreath dotted with gold berries. The other carries his naughty and nice list on a long cloth scroll. A gold twisted cord holds the green velvet toy sack over his shoulder, packed with a plush teddy bear in a gold ribbon, a frosted mini Christmas tree, and a small gold horn.

The Legacy Behind the G

Grambling began in 1896, when African American farmers in north Louisiana formed the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association and asked Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee for help building a school. He sent Charles P. Adams, who became the founding president when the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School opened on November 1, 1901. The school moved to its present site in 1905 and, after several name changes, became Grambling State University in 1974.

Coach Eddie Robinson led Grambling football from 1941 to 1997, winning 408 games, 17 SWAC titles, and 9 Black college national championships. His players included Paul "Tank" Younger, the first NFL player from an HBCU, and Doug Williams, the first African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl and be named its MVP. Basketball Hall of Famer Willis Reed played at Grambling, and singer Erykah Badu studied there. The World Famed Tiger Marching Band, founded in 1926 with 17 instruments, played Super Bowls I and IX, and the Bayou Classic with Southern has filled the Saturday after Thanksgiving since 1974.

Christmas Decor for the Grambling Family

Set this African American Santa Claus figurine on the mantel, a bookcase, an office desk, or the table where the family gathers after the Bayou Classic. It makes a Christmas gift for a Grambling graduate who can't make it home, a student finishing the fall semester, or the grandparent who has worn black and gold every November for decades. Families split between Grambling and Southern can add the Southern University Proud Santa and settle the score on one mantel.
