Design Details
The black cotton-blend body opens at an orange V-neck and button placket that closes with six black buttons. FLORIDA A&M is embroidered in orange over UNIVERSITY in green on the left chest, and 1887 runs vertically down the right front in outlined orange numerals. The back carries RATTLERS arched in green with an orange outline above a large Rattler head in green and orange, fangs bared. Ribbed cuffs and waistband are striped in orange and green, and an orange ribbed collar finishes the back neck.
FAMU Women Who Made History
Florida A&M began on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, with 15 students and two instructors, and grew into Florida's only public HBCU. FAMU women have been making history ever since. Carrie P. Meek, class of 1946, became one of the first Black Floridians elected to Congress since Reconstruction, and FAMU's Black archives building carries her name. Students Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson sparked the 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott after their arrest for refusing to give up their bus seats, and sisters Patricia and Priscilla Stephens chose jail over paying fines after the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins. Althea Gibson, class of 1953, crossed tennis's color line and became the first Black player to win a Grand Slam title. Shirley Kinsey and her husband Bernard, both FAMU graduates, built one of the largest private collections of African American art and history.
