Divine Presence

There is a light that does not come from the sun. It arrives quietly, the way morning finds a darkened room, and once it settles over a life, everything it touches begins to glow. The faithful know this light. They feel it in the hush before a prayer is answered, in the warmth that fills a room when believers join hands, and in the stillness that whispers, without a word, you are not alone. "In thy presence is fulness of joy" (Psalm 16:11). That presence has a way of drawing people together, and when the faithful gather, it moves among them like a current, carrying one heart to the next.

Divine Presence by S. Artis paints that feeling. Three Black women walk through a field of yellow blooms so full it seems to have no edge. Above them, a column of golden light pours down from a deep blue night sky, and wherever it falls, the flowers brighten until the whole field shimmers. Each woman gathers a bouquet as she goes, and each is wrapped in her own color: a red sun hat and cream dress with a green sash on the left, a coral gown draped low across the back in the center, and a yellow wrap over a plum skirt on the right. In the foreground, a narrow green path winds between rows of what look like daffodils, leading the eye straight into the light.

Where Two or Three Are Gathered

Jesus promised, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20). Artis places three women at the heart of the canvas and lets the light answer that promise. It does not single out one of them. It pours over all three together, glowing brightest above the two women who lean in toward each other over a shared bouquet. Scripture teaches that "a threefold cord is not quickly broken" (Ecclesiastes 4:12), and the painting holds that strength in its composition: three figures, three bouquets, one field of light.

A Presence That Goes With You

The Lord told Moses, "My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest" (Exodus 33:14). The painting carries the same assurance. Darkness still gathers at the corners of the sky, yet it never reaches the field. The women are at ease, unhurried, filling their arms with flowers in the full glow of the light. The empty path at the bottom of the canvas stays open, an invitation for the viewer to step out of the shadow and join the fellowship.
