Service is Sovereignty, and this Christmas Santa is serving Bulldog Pride. The Alabama A&M University Bulldogs HBCU College Santa Claus Figurine dresses a 12-inch Black Santa Claus in a maroon coat and stocking cap trimmed in white faux fur, with a maroon toy sack bearing the AAMU logo set right at his feet. For Normalites in Huntsville and far beyond, this is holiday decor in the colors you have cheered for every fall.
Santa in Maroon and White
A maroon stocking cap with a white fur brim, a sprig of holly, and a gold bell at the tip frames Santa's sculpted brown face, rosy cheeks, and full, curly black beard. His maroon coat is edged in white fur and cinched with a dark belt and gold buckle. One hand holds a frosted mini Christmas tree. The other carries his naughty and nice list, a long cloth scroll stitched with names. A gold twisted cord leads to the maroon toy sack in front of him, embroidered with the white interlocking AAMU logo and spilling over with a wrapped red gift tied in green ribbon, a candy cane, holly, and red and gold berry picks.
The Legacy Behind the Bulldog
Alabama A&M opened on May 1, 1875, as the Huntsville Normal School, with 61 students under William Hooper Councill, a formerly enslaved man who became its first principal and president. Named a land-grant college in 1890, the school moved the next year to the site that came to be called Normal, which is why students still call themselves Normalites. It became Alabama A&M College in 1948 and Alabama A&M University in 1969, adopted the motto Service is Sovereignty in 1909, and celebrated 150 years in 2025.
Bulldog alumni include Pro Football Hall of Famer John Stallworth, who earned both his bachelor's degree and MBA at AAMU; environmental justice pioneer Robert D. Bullard, class of 1968; record-setting pass rusher Robert Mathis; and singer Ruben Studdard, who studied there before winning American Idol. The Marching Maroon and White, which traces its roots to 1890 and was once directed by W.C. Handy, led the 2006 Rose Parade and marched in the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Every fall, the Magic City Classic with Alabama State fills Legion Field in Birmingham, a rivalry first played in 1924.
Christmas Decorations for the Bulldog Family
Set this African American Santa Claus figurine on the mantel, a bookshelf, an office desk, or the entry table that greets holiday guests. It makes a Christmas gift for an AAMU graduate far from Huntsville, a student finishing the fall semester, or the family that has worn maroon and white to every Magic City Classic. He arrives in a green snowflake gift box with a display window, ready to wrap or set out.
