About the Artist

Sylvia "Gbaby" Cohen paints Black women in bold color, and her brand began with a mother's search for a handbag. Her daughter, actress Giovonnie Samuels of Nickelodeon's All That, wanted a bag for an awards event that reflected women who looked like her. When the two found none, Sylvia painted one herself. Mothers and kids on set took notice, and she was soon spending her days as the set mom, painting handbags and shirts. That moment drew on years of groundwork: a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a business minor from the State University of New York at Binghamton, work as a graphic artist at the San Diego Monitor News under artist Albert Fennell, her hand-painted tee line Another Sylvia Original, and Unique Fashion Gallery, a San Diego shop that housed seven artists and designers. Today the Gbaby name appears on planners, calendars, totes, magnets and hand-painted handbags.
