Description

In 1911, eight years before the Negro National League existed and nine years before he gathered other Black baseball owners in Kansas City to make organized league play a reality, Andrew "Rube" Foster founded the Chicago American Giants. The "EST 1911" stitched beneath the team name on this cap marks that moment, the founding of the franchise that became the most dominant force in Black baseball for more than two decades and the launching pad for everything Foster would later build.

The front of this cap carries "CHICAGO" arched over "AMERICAN GIANTS" in bold three-dimensional script, finished with a white star and the founding year. The side panel features the team's classic interlocking CAG roundel with "AMERICAN" banner detail, while the back carries the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum's signature phrase, "DISCOVER GREATNESS," arched across the crown. The underbrim is stitched with "Negro Leagues" in red script, and the adjustable strap carries the NLBM tag, marking this cap as officially connected to America's National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

The Chicago American Giants were the most dominant team in Black baseball from the early 1910s through the mid-1930s. Founded by Andrew "Rube" Foster in 1911 after he split from the Leland Giants and partnered with John Schorling, son-in-law of Chicago White Sox owner Charles Comiskey, the American Giants played their home games at South Side Park, the former home of the White Sox. Foster managed the team from 1911 to 1926, leading them to win every declared western championship through their first decade, losing only to the 1916 Indianapolis ABCs. When Foster founded the Negro National League in 1920, the American Giants were charter members and immediately captured the first three NNL pennants in 1920, 1921, and 1922. Managed by "Gentleman" Dave Malarcher, they won back-to-back Colored World Series titles over the Bacharach Giants in 1926 and 1927. The franchise produced an extraordinary list of National Baseball Hall of Famers, including Rube Foster, his half-brother Bill Foster, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Pete Hill, Cristóbal Torriente, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Turkey Stearnes, and Willie Wells.

"Discover Greatness" is the signature phrase of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. It first appeared in 1993 as the title of the museum's first traveling exhibition and has since become the institution's mission statement in three words. The Negro Leagues produced thousands of athletes whose brilliance was hidden from the broader American public by segregation, and whose statistics, championships, and stories were often left out of the official record. "Discover Greatness" is an invitation to find them, learn them, and honor them. In December 2020, Major League Baseball took a major step in that direction when it officially recognized the seven Negro Leagues of 1920 to 1948 as Major Leagues, restoring the records and statistics of these athletes to their rightful place in baseball history.

Constructed from a durable wool blend in classic black with high-detail multi-color embroidery throughout, this cap features a structured six-panel build, curved brim with white sandwich trim, and an adjustable hook-and-loop closure for a comfortable fit on nearly any head.

A portion of every sale supports the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, helping preserve the stories, artifacts, and legacies of the players who built this game before they were allowed to play it on its biggest stages.
