The History Behind the Image
Dr. King studied the nonviolent philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi as a seminary student, and in 1959 he traveled to India on what he called a pilgrimage to learn more about Gandhi's methods. A portrait of Gandhi hung in King's office at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta. Photographer Bob Fitch's 1966 image of King standing before that portrait became one of the best-known pictures of him, and it later helped inspire the design of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C.
