"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16
Before there was a single present under a single tree, there was a Gift. God did not send His Son to a palace. He sent Him to a manger, wrapped in cloths and laid where the animals fed, born to a family far from home, so that the poor, the overlooked, and the weary would know that heaven came near to them first. We keep Christ in Christmas because the season was never about what we can buy; it is about what God already gave. The Greatest Gift holds that truth in a single glowing image.
On the cover of A King Is Born, artist Janine Kai Robinson sets a Black Madonna and Child inside a stained-glass window. Mary is wrapped in a deep blue mantle over a white head covering, a small gold cross resting at her neckline, while the Christ child sleeps against her heart beneath his own golden halo. Cobalt, amber, and crimson panes rise behind them between carved columns, and the words A King Is Born, The Greatest Gift From Heaven Above run in gold script across the navy border below. It is a religious African American Christmas card that looks the way the season feels in the sanctuary.
Inside the Card
The left inside panel continues the theme with an arched stained-glass window on deep navy and a verse in gold script: "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15). Paul's Greek word for "indescribable" appears nowhere else in the Bible, a fitting choice for a card about a gift too large for words. The right panel carries the printed message:
God sent His Son as the ultimate gift to the world. The gift of love. May His love fill your heart and home this Christmas. May His peace guide your heart this season and always. Merry Christmas
Open space beneath the blessing leaves room to add names, a family update, or a personal prayer.
Who It's For
This is the card for the church directory list, the pastor's family, the choir, the usher board, and the aunt who still mails cards to every cousin. It also suits anyone who has looked for a Madonna and Child that reflects their own family and come up short. Browse more designs in our African American Christmas cards collection.
