That year, Black ballplayers who had left the Baltimore Giants after white owners took control re-formed as the Black Sox, an independent team backed by Black owner Howard Young. By the late 1910s, the club was owned by local businessmen George Rossiter and Charles Spedden, and in 1923 the Black Sox became one of the six charter members of the Eastern Colored League, playing home games at Maryland Baseball Park in South Baltimore.

The Black Sox left their biggest mark in 1929 with the "Million Dollar Infield" of Jud "Boojum" Wilson, Frank Warfield, Oliver Marcell and Dick Lundy. The press gave the four that nickname for what they might have been worth in the segregated major leagues. Baltimore won about 70 percent of its games that season and claimed the American Negro League championship.

In 1932, Baltimore laundry owner Joe Cambria became co-owner and general manager. He moved home games to his own ballpark, Bugle Field, and added lights for night games. The Black Sox joined the East-West League that year, but the league collapsed in the middle of the season. After two years in the Negro National League, Cambria's application to keep the team in the league was rejected in 1934, several star players announced they were leaving, and he disbanded the club. The Black Sox name passed to another franchise and was gone by the mid-1930s.

Seven members of the Baseball Hall of Fame played for Baltimore: Jud Wilson (1922 to 1930), Ben Taylor (1923 and 1926 to 1928), Pete Hill (1924 to 1925), Biz Mackey (1928 and 1930), Satchel Paige (1930), Mule Suttles (1930) and Leon Day (1934).
