Description

Love holds a community together. Moving Couple captures that truth in carved wood: a dark sese wood walking stick featuring two figures locked in a warm embrace, a lasting reminder of the strength that comes from standing together.

Designed by Ghanaian artisan Eva Asantewa Amakye, this premium walking stick is thicker and more intricately carved than most standard African walking sticks. The embracing couple takes center stage, and embossed aluminum accents add texture and a soft gleam against the deep brown-black finish.

A Tribute to Love and Togetherness

The couple at the heart of this design speaks to the power of love in a relationship and in a community. In many African traditions, marriage joins more than two people; it ties families and generations together. The embrace carved here honors partnership, devotion and the bonds that carry people through every season of life. Whether it marks a wedding, an anniversary or a lifetime together, it is a symbol worth keeping close.

Walking Sticks in African Tradition

Many African societies regard a person carrying a walking stick with respect and dignity. Often associated with age and the wisdom gathered over the years, the walking stick has long carried messages through its carving. Among the Akan of Ghana, the carved staffs held by the chief's spokesmen, the akyeame, illustrate proverbs and values for all to see. Moving Couple continues that tradition with a message about love and unity.

Hand Carved in Ghana

Each Moving Couple walking stick is hand carved from sese wood, a native West African wood favored by Ghanaian carvers for its fine detail, then finished in a rich dark tone and set with embossed aluminum. Because every piece is made by hand, there are slight differences in size, shape and pattern, which make each walking stick one of a kind.

Designer Eva Asantewa Amakye of Accra works hand in hand with master carvers to bring her ideas to life, overseeing every piece for quality. Her walking sticks at Black Art Depot also include Sankofa Bird and Osunu Greeting.

Display It or Carry It

Display it on a wall in a living room or bedroom, pair it with wedding photos or African art, or carry it at vow renewals, reunions and cultural celebrations. It makes a heartfelt gift for newlyweds, anniversaries, Valentine's Day or a couple who has built a life together.

Please Note: This decorative walking stick has not been approved as a medical mobility aid and is not intended for heavy-duty use. It is crafted for display, cultural celebration and light accessory use. The stick does not include a rubber tip. You can purchase one separately; however, because each piece is handmade and the end width varies, we recommend waiting until your walking stick arrives so you can measure it and choose a tip that fits properly.
