Nine pennants. Nine straight years. No one came close. The Homestead Grays were the most dominant team in Negro League history and Josh Gibson was the reason pitchers lost sleep.
From 1937 to 1945, the Grays claimed the Negro National League title every single season. Gibson, who wore #20, hit with a power that Walter Johnson called extraordinary and Satchel Paige called unmatchable. When MLB officially incorporated Negro League statistics in 2024, Gibson displaced Ty Cobb as the all-time batting average leader and surpassed Babe Ruth in career slugging, a recognition that was long overdue.
