For the Culture: The Art of C'Babi Bayoc 2027 Wall Calendar

Creative Black Artist Battling Ignorance. Born Clifford Miskell Jr., he took CBABI at Grambling State in the early nineties as an acronym, and later added BAYOC, Blessed African Youth Of Creativity, as something he could hand down to children he had not had yet. Everything he has painted since has been an argument about how Black people get depicted and who gets to do the depicting. For The Culture collects twelve of those arguments.

The work is loud in the best way. Acrylic, a flat brush, and an iPad, in his words, used to show the dopeness of Black people. Flat planes of orange and violet, faces built from stacked color blocks, hand-lettering running up the side of a canvas like it was the point all along. Bayoc got his start drawing caricatures at Six Flags over St. Louis, a job that taught him to work fast and take criticism from someone standing right in front of him. That led to illustration work, and by 1998 he was producing a monthly caricature of a featured artist for Rap Pages. Around the same time Prince began collecting his paintings, and in 2001 one of them became the cover of The Rainbow Children.

In 2012 he set himself a New Year's resolution to paint one positive image of Black fatherhood every day for a year, and 365 Days with Dad became the project he is still best known for. It ended up taking two years to complete, partly because Cbabi was a father in the middle of his own personal fatherhood journey.

Since he completed that project, he has created more than twenty murals on school walls around St. Louis and illustrated Goodnight Racism with Ibram X. Kendi, which landed him on the New York Times bestseller list.

Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc works from St. Louis, where he and his wife Reine run Sweet Art, a bakery and studio under one roof. His subjects are family, children, music, and, as he puts it, other cool stuff designed with line, bold color, and phunk. His standing advice to anyone who asks: keep your brush wet and paint the life that you want.
