Ernie Barnes, affectionately known as "Big Rembrandt" by his teammates, is the first professional athlete to become a celebrated and internationally acclaimed artist.
Ernie was known for his unique style of elongation, energy, and movement. His artwork was frequently inspired by his roots in the south and memories of his childhood. His subject matter drew from these experiences and as a result, pool halls, barbershops, porch ladies, church, street singers, and sandlot games are depicted in his works of art.
His most famous painting Sugar Shack, which was inspired by a dance at the armory in his hometown of Durham, NC was shown in the credits of Good Times and on Marvin Gaye's album cover. Many are unaware that he was the creative force behind JJ's artwork on Good Times.
Our 2022 calendar serves as a tribute to the life, legacy, and timeless talent of Ernie Barnes. The calendar includes the following images by Ernie Barnes: Sam and Sidney, Somewhere Else, In the Moment, The Dunk, Springboard, Red Guitar, Title IX, The Advocate, The Critic's Corner, In Remembrance, Big Joe's Pool Hall, From the Pocket and Slapshot. Ernie Barnes
Ernest “Ernie” Eugene Barnes, Jr. (July 15, 1938 – April 27, 2009) was an African-American painter, well known for his unique style of elongation and movement. He was also a professional football player, actor and author. Ernie Barnes' involvement with art began at an early age, like most gifted adult artists. However, when he reached high school his creative endeavors were temporarily detoured in his determination to become a successful athlete. In part this was a response to the demands of peer pressure which can be so strong at that age. He graduated from his high school a hero and star football player, and with 26 full athletic scholarships to choose from. He chose North Carolina Central University and a major in art. After college he continued in an illustrious professional athletic career, but never let his love for football overshadow his love for art. Football gave him an enormous satisfaction of achievement, of being able to do something extremely difficult, and do it well. Art, however, allowed him the privilege to interpret for the public his concepts of the relationship between art and life. Most in stock items ship in 0 to 5 business depending upon the shipping method selected during checkout.
