During the Civil War, approximately 179,000 members of the Union Army was made up of African Americans and over 40,000 African Americans are said to have died during the conflict.

Robert graduated from Perpich Center for Arts Education (formerly The Minnesota Center for Arts Education High School) in Golden Valley, MN, where his exposure to artwork from various cultures allowed him to enhance his knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts.
