Sylvia "Gbaby" Cohen is the artist, known for her hand-painted handbags, accessories, and joyful images of women of color. A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton, she began her creative business selling hand-painted tees and later opened a fashion gallery in San Diego that showcased fellow artists and designers. The Gbaby name was born on the set of a Nickelodeon show, when her daughter asked for a bag featuring women who looked like her; Sylvia painted one herself, and a signature style celebrating Black beauty and womanhood was born.
