She led the Justice Department through investigations into policing practices in Ferguson, Baltimore, and Chicago.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCarol Moseley Braun\u003c\/strong\u003e became the first Black woman elected to the United States Senate, winning Illinois in 1992. She later served as U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLorraine Hansberry\u003c\/strong\u003e wrote \u003cem\u003eA Raisin in the Sun\u003c\/em\u003e, which in 1959 became the first play by a Black woman produced on Broadway. At twenty-nine, she was the youngest American and the first Black playwright to win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQueen Latifah\u003c\/strong\u003e won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1995 for \"U.N.I.T.Y.,\" the first female rapper to take that award. In 2024, she became the first Black woman in more than forty years to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and only the second ever.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSheryl Swoopes\u003c\/strong\u003e was the first player signed to the WNBA in 1997.
