he-suffers-for-you-anonymous
He Suffers for You

He suffers for you. He suffered for you. On a hill called Calvary, the Messiah was lifted up between heaven and earth. From the quiet agony of Gethsemane to the heavy shadows of the cross, Jesus carried what was never his to carry, trading his innocence for our transgressions in one act of love. He paid it all so that we might walk in grace.

That moment lives in He Suffers for You. Darkness covers the land, and a Black Christ hangs on a rough wooden cross, arms stretched wide, fingers curled around the nails driven through his palms, head fallen against his chest. Every rib and tendon of his body shows the weight of the crucifixion. Gathered on either side are the people who loved him and the prophet who first announced him.

Who Stands at the Cross

On the left, Mary, the mother of Jesus, collapses in a white veil and robe, held upright by John, the beloved disciple, in a deep red cloak. Kneeling at the foot of the cross, Mary Magdalene lifts her clasped hands toward her Lord, a small white ointment jar, her traditional emblem, resting on the ground beside her. The Gospel of John places these three near the cross, where Jesus gave his mother into John's care (John 19:25-27).

On the right stands John the Baptist, barefoot in a red robe, an open book in one hand and the other pointing straight at Christ. At his feet, a white lamb stands over a golden chalice with a slender cross rising behind it. The Baptist was executed before the crucifixion (Matthew 14:10), so his presence here is symbolic. He is the prophet who first pointed to Jesus and declared, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).

Why "He Suffers for You"

The title speaks directly to the person standing in front of the painting. Scripture describes the crucifixion as suffering carried on behalf of others: "He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities" (Isaiah 53:5), and "Christ also suffered for us" (1 Peter 2:21). The Baptist's pointing hand and the lamb at his feet deliver the same message. The one on the cross is the sacrifice, and his suffering is for you.

A Renaissance Altarpiece, Reimagined

The composition follows the Crucifixion panel of the Isenheim Altarpiece, painted by Matthias Grünewald around 1512 to 1516 for the hospital chapel of St. Anthony's monastery in Isenheim and now held at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France. The monastery's hospital cared for patients with painful skin diseases, and Grünewald painted Christ's suffering so the sick could see that their Savior shared their pain. This version keeps Grünewald's arrangement of figures, the lamb and chalice, and the night sky, then paints Christ and those around him with brown skin, giving Black believers a classic crucifixion scene in which they can see themselves.

About the Artist

The painter behind He Suffers for You has not been identified, and the work is offered under the name Anonymous. What the artist left is a careful study of a 500-year-old masterwork, translated into saturated reds, warm browns and deep shadow. The figures keep the weight and gesture of the original while reflecting the many Black Christians who want to see Christ portrayed in their own image.

Bring It Home

He Suffers for You commands attention above a sofa, a fireplace mantel or a dining room buffet, and it is a fitting centerpiece for a church fellowship hall or a pastor's study. The brown frame with black accents warms up the red robes, while the black frame with brown accents leans into the painting's dark night sky.
