ABOUT THURGOOD MARSHALL

 

Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2nd, 2008 and died on January 24th, 1993.  He is primarily known as being the first African American US Supreme Court Justice. 

 

Thurgood Marshall was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967.  Prior to serving in that capacity, Thurgood Marshall was also appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and was appointed as the United States Solicitor General  by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.

 

Thurgood Marshall  had a long and succesful tenure as a United States Supreme Court Justice from 1967 until 1991 when he retired due to age and health concerns.

 

He was born in Baltimore Maryland and educated at Lincoln University and Howard University Law School.  Thurgood Marshall began work for the NAACP in 1934 and eventually became the organization's legal director from 1940 until 1961.  While serving in this capacity, Attorney Thurgood Marshall won 29 Supreme Court cases including the famous Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka which eliminated the legal basis for segregation in the United States of America.
