Description

The Fulani people are renowned for the creation of lavish, thin gold earrings with delicate filigree details. In Fulani culture, earrings were treasured accessories worn for special events like weddings and ceremonies. They served as a symbol of wealth and social standing. Due to their nomadic lifestyle, the Fulani wore their wealth so it could always be with them.

A few Fulani earrings were so substantial that they necessitated yarn to be wound around the hooks in order to reduce the heaviness of their gold. For wealthy women and families, the size of earrings was a sign of their wealth. These jewelry pieces were also oftentimes passed down as treasured heirlooms.

This modernized version of the classic design has been crafted by hand in Africa with either hammered brass or sterling silver, ensuring that it is not only lightweight and affordable but also made to last for everyday wear. Despite its innovative twist, this adaptation still maintains the traditional aesthetic without compromising on quality.

Our earrings are currently available in three different sizes:

Large: 1.75 inches x 0.75 inches

Medium: 1.25 inches x 0.5 inches

Small: 1 inch x 0.5 inches

About the Fulani People

With a fascinating cultural background and prosperity through migration and commerce, the Fulani are one of West Africa's largest ethnic groups. Since ancient times these nomadic people have embraced their cattle-herding tradition - an integral part of life in the Sahel region.

Spanning from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, the Sahel region of Africa is an arid strip teeming with life and cultural diversity. Home to multiple ethnic groups including Fulani, this fragile ecosystem experiences recurrent droughts yet remains a vital agricultural zone as well as a pastoral center.
